The Oak Park Tennis Center has served the Oak Park/River Forest and surrounding communities for more than 80 years, offering the only fully public clay courts in the county and nearby communities. Situated at the corner of Lake Street and Harlem Avenue on land owned by the Cook County Forest Preserve, our Center is open to all members of the public, providing a variety of economical options for season passes and hourly per-use play.
Our history began in 1923 when a group of tennis enthusiasts responded to a need for community recreation. Working with the Cook County Forest Preserve, this group of volunteers developed what eventually became known as the West Side Tennis Center. Our clay courts hosted a number of championships in the middle of the century, as well as served as the site where junior players could compete for entry into national tournaments. We are currently the location for the United States Tennis Association’s annual Midwest Senior Men’s Clay Court Championship.
Community volunteers have operated the Oak Park Tennis Center since its inception, which has been fiscally self-sufficient for its entire history. The season passes and per-use fees are used for yearly repairs to the buildings and courts, daily court maintenance, upkeep of the locker rooms, overhead and special programs. Although difficult and costly to maintain, clay courts are a very valuable resource to the community. Seniors, in particular, benefit from playing on clay courts, as the surface is easier on the joints.
Players of all skill levels are welcome to experience our outstanding facilities. Give us a try, and we know you’ll be back again!
